On May 31 the Tbilisi Youth Palace hosted an interesting event which united people of different professions around chess. The Georgian society has made another step towards the Batumi Chess Olympiad. The Nona Gaprindashvili Cup started its journey on this very day.
With the efforts of a Georgian grandmaster and legendary chess player Nana Alexandria and a Georgian grandmaster and multiple-time World Champion in chess compositions David Gurgenidze "The First Cup of the Democratic Republic" was founded in the Youth Palace, where 16 teams were fighting to win it (actors, artists, writers, scientists, businessmen etc.).
Especially tense was the semi-finals, when two teams of writers “Azmai” and “Writers” faced each other. In the end, "The First Cup of the Democratic Republic" was won by the team “Writers”.
Nana Alexsandria’s book - “History in Photographs” was presented at the event, as well as Neyko Neidze's paintings with the theme: chess, Keti Matabeli's special chessboard and the photo collages depicting the success of Georgian chess.
At the beginning of the event, the European Chess Union president Zurab Azmaiparashvili and the Georgian Chess Federation president Giorgi Giorgadze named Lasha Talakhadze, the world's strongest man, a Georgian weightlifter, as the Goodwill Ambassador of the 43rd Chess Olympiad. And together, they once again presented the Georgian society with the cup, which bears the name of legendary Nona Gaprindashvili and which started its travels in the Georgian regions on this day.
