Independence Day of Georgia and the 43rd Chess Olympiad mascot

On May 26, 2018, Georgia celebrated the centenary anniversary of the founding of the first democratic republic. The Georgian Chess Federation and the Organizing Committee of the 43rd Chess Olympiad 2018 joined the festive events, which were arranged in Tbilisi and other parts of our country. Simultaneous game sessions were arranged within the blitz chess games at the Rustaveli Avenue (near the Besik uphill).

President of the European Chess Union, Director of the World Chess Olympiad 2018 Organizing Committee, Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of the Georgian Chess Federation and Chairman of the World Chess Olympiad 2018 Organizing Committee, Giorgi Giorgadze, the World Champion in rapid chess and the Europe 2018 Vice-Champion, Nana Dzagnidze, also World five-time Champion, recognized as the best female athlete of XX century in Georgia, the legendary Nona Gaprindashvili challenged the chess enthusiasts and fans.

Among the opponents there were also Olympic Champions - Lasha Talakhadze, recognized as the world best weightlifter of 2017 and 3-way Olympic Champion, President of Georgian Weightlifting Federation, Kakhi Kakhiashvili. Today, the fans saw the 43rd World Chess Olympiad mascot – turtle too. He was introduced to the fans and chess corner guests by the Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia, Mikheil Giorgadze together with Zurab Azmaiparashvili and Giorgi Giorgadze. On the Rustaveli Avenue, the election of the mascot’s name has started: the applicants wrote their version of the name on a paper and placed it into a special box. The name of the mascot-turtle will be determined later, until that the little fans took memorable photos with him.  Many activities were also held in Batumi, the host of the 43rd World Chess Olympiad: In the chess club on the Boulevard started a chess tournament dedicated to May 26 and there were also held simultaneous chess game sessions with Salome Melia. From 12:00am, at the Wonder Square appeared the Batumi 2018 mascot – turtle, which took lots of memorable photos and played chess on the giant board. The Chairman of the Government of Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Zurab Pataradze and the Major of Batumi, Lasha Komakhidze welcomed the Batumi 2018 chess corner guests and they were speaking to the chess enthusiasts about the organizational issues and significance of holding the Olympiad in Batumi. At the Batumi Chess Corner, the children of the art studio "Palitra" made sketches of the chess theme and they came to the center of attention of many visitors.
