Chess Olympiad 2018: The Olympic Day at the turtle lake

On June 23 the Organizing Committee of the World Chess Olympiad 2018 joined the initiative of the National Olympic Committee of Georgia and together with various sports Federations celebrated the international Olympic Day on Turtle Lake in Tbilisi. Batumi will host the 43rd World Chess Olympiad from September 23 till October 6, prior to that, a number of events are being organized to raise the popularity and awareness of the tournament. Today, the Organizing Committee of Batumi Chess Olympiad handed out informational flyers to supporters and chess enthusiasts who arrived at Turtle Lake. A photo exhibition reflecting the glory of Georgian chess was also arranged and the culmination of the event was the appearance of the 43rd Chess Olympiad’s mascot-turtle Bathusa Turtlestein. Among others, the Olympic Champions David Gobedjishvili (freestyle wrestling - Seoul 1988), Kakhi Kakhiashvili (weightlifting - Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000) and Giorgi Asanidze (Athens 2004) have taken memorable photos with Bathusa.

"Hosting the World Chess Olympiad is a great honor for our country and at the same time, a serious challenge. Such a large sporting event has never been held in Georgia: from September 23 till October 6 our Country will have about 4,000 visitors from 189 countries! I believe that the Organizing Committee of the 43rd World Chess Olympiad will hold this great and prestigious international competition at the highest level“, said the Georgian Chess Federation President Giorgi Giorgadze.

The tour of "Nona Cup" continues under the aegis of Batumi 2018. The mobile Cup of Nona Gaprindashvili, the five-time World Chess Champion and the Goodwill Ambassador of the 2018 Batumi Chess Olympiad, has already been exhibited in Rustavi and Telavi and in few days, the supporters will see the "Nona Cup" in Mtskheta and Stepantsminda.

In 1997, the International chess federation – FIDE – established the “Nona Gaprindashvili Cup”. Starting from the Chess Olympiad in 1998, the Cup has been awarded to the country, whose men and women's teams will get the most points in total.
