Batumi 2018:  The Officials Visited A Sports Complex

The Chairman of Adjara AR Government Zurab Pataradze, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport of Georgia Shalva Gogoladze, the European Chess Union president Zurab Azmaiparashvili, the Georgian Chess Federation president Giorgi Giorgadze, as well as FIDE and ECU officials visited the multifunctional Sports Complex in Batumi, which is under construction.

The building that will be hosting the 43rd Chess Olympiad is intended for different kinds of sports and combines two halls: the large hall is intended for 2500 spectators, the small one - for 600. The construction of the Sports Complex in Batumi started in 2016 and will end in several months.  “In recent years, many sporting infrastructural projects have been developed, although, the multifunctional Sport Palace of Batumi is definitely exceptional. After the construction is finished our favorite city will have a real sports center, where it will be possible to hold the various high class international tournaments of different kinds of sports. It is worth mentioning that similar projects are being developed in Gori and Telavi as well. I am glad that our foreign guests are satisfied with what they saw. I am certain that Batumi will host the Chess Olympiad on the highest level.” - Said the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport Shalva Gogoladze. 

“The European Individual Chess Championship is coming to an end. Numerous guests of Batumi have expressed their admiration of the tournament organization. This makes me certain that we are capable of properly holding different large scale and important events. The Sports Palace, which is under construction and was visited by the world chess officials, will open several months ahead of the Chess Olympiad. Although, Batumi and our region in general has other utterly important infrastructural projects as well. I can assure everyone that Batumi will greet the Chess Olympiad with the modern Sports Complex, well maintained roads, hotels and several interesting projects.” - Said the Chairman of Adjara AR Government Zurab Pataradze.

“My debut in the international tournament was a long time ago, in 1999, in Batumi. I was enchanted by this city and I am happy that Batumi will greet the scheduled Chess Olympiad with this amazing Sports Complex. I admired what I saw and I think that your city is capable of hosting the large scale international tournaments in different kinds of sports.” - Said the Grandmaster and the Minister of Finance of Latvia Dana Reizniece-Ozola, who Zurab Azmaiparashvili named as his team member for the ECU presidential election. The ECU presidential elections will be held in Batumi during the Chess Olympiad days. 

The 43rd Chess Olympiad will start on September 23 and end on October 6 in Batumi. The “Black Sea Arena” in Shekvetili will host the celebratory opening ceremony. According to the current information, Batumi will be visited by 4000 guests from 189 countries for the sake of the Chess Olympiad.
