From September 23 to October 5 Batumi is hosting the 43rd World Chess Olympiad.
One of the main awards of the Olympiad, the five-time World Chess Champion Nona Gaprindashvili’s Cup is travelling in different cities of our country and before the start of the Olympiad it was exhibited in Batumi. The event was hosted by the the chess club “Nona”, named after Nona Gaprindashvili and located in the boulevard.
Georgian Chess Federation President, the Chairman of the 43rd World Chess Olympiad Organizing Committee Giorgi Giorgadze, the European Chess Union president Zurab Azmaiparishvili, FIDE consultant Sopio Bakuridze, the representatives of Batumi World Chess Olympiad’s Organizing Committee and veteran chess players from Batumi participated in the festive introduction of the Cup, which consisted of an entertaining quiz, photo exhibition dedicated to Georgian chess, the simultaneous chess exhibition with Grandmaster Salome Melia and a chess flash mob.
The event was attended by the Chairman of AR Adjara’s Government Tornike Rizhvadze, the Deputy Mayor of Batumi Lela Surmanidze, the Boulevard’s Director Irakli Dzincharadze and the representatives of the local Government.

The purpose of today’s event is to popularize the Olympiad. I would also like to invite you all to the Olympiad’s grand opening ceremony, which will be held on September 23 in Shekvetili at the Black Sea Arena. I’m certain, Batumi Chess Olympiad will be a great celebration for all chess lovers.”- announced Giorgi Giorgadze.
The World Chess Federation – FIDE- founded the Nona Cup in 1997. Starting from the 1998’s Olympiad, the Nona Cup is awarded to the country, which’s teams of both men and women earn the most points. The Nona Cup was exhibited in almost every region of Georgia: the capital, Kakheti, Shida and Kvemo Kartli, Mckheta-Mtianeti, Imereti, Racha, Samegrelo and Guria.
Batumi was awarded the right to host the Olympiad in 2014, at the FIDE General Assembly held in Tromso, Norway, where Batumi got 93 votes, while the opponent Durban (South Africa) got 58 votes.
The FIDE presidential and the Continental Chess Association elections will be held during the Olympiad days.
