Batumi 2018: Nona Gaprindashvili is the European champion!

The Goodwill Ambassador of the 43rd World Chess Olympiad Nona Gaprindashvili achieved the title of the European Champion among the senior chess players for the 4th time in a row!

In the European Senior Chess Championship 2018 held in Drammen, Norway the legendary chess player got 5,5 points out of possible 9 (3 victories, 5 ties, 1 loss) and became the Champion among senior Europeans for the 5th time. She celebrated the previous 4 victories in 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2017. We should also point out that starting from 2014, the European Championship between senior chess players has been held in 2 categories, for people at the age of 50+ and 65+.

Nona Gaprindashvili, who became the European Champion in the 65+ age category, is also a five-time World Champion among the senior chess players. She achieved these titles in 1995, 2009, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This year, the tournament will be hosted by Bled, Slovenia.

Tamar Khmiadashvili, the five-time winner of the World Senior Chess Championship (1998, 1999, 2003, 2010 and 2018) won the bronze medal at the European Senior Championship in Drammen. She finished the tournament with 5 points (4 victories, 2 ties, 3 losses).
