The journey of one of the most important prizes in the Chess Olympiad, the "Nona Cup" continues its journey in Georgia. The mobile Cup of Nona Gaprindashvili, the five-time World Chess Champion and the Goodwill Ambassador of the 43rd Chess Olympiad, has been exhibited in Rustavi after its visit to Telavi.

The Georgian Chess Federation President Giorgi Giorgadze, the Batumi Chess Olympiad mascot-turtle “Bathusa Turtlestein” and the 43rd Chess Olympiad organizing committee members were welcomed by the City Mayor Irakli Tabagua, supporters and young chess players in the Rustavi city park.

"I am glad that this beautiful award of our famous Champion, the Georgia's best sportsman among women of the 20th century, the five-time World Chess Champion Nona Gaprindashvili, has been exhibited here in Rustavi today. Today's event serves the popularization of the planned Olympiad in Batumi and I want to invite all of you, chess lovers, as well as small chess players, in autumn to Batumi. We are hosting a very big and important tournament, which I am sure, will be the greatest celebration for all the chess enthusiasts. Such a large sporting event has never been held in Georgia: our Country will have about 4,000 visitors from 189 countries! On September 23, the Olympiad will have a grandiose opening ceremony and we invite everyone to enjoy that beautiful show" - said Giorgi Giorgadze.

“Hosting the "Nona Cup" is a great honor for our city. I am glad that today’s event is attended by so many children. I hope future champions are among them ... As far as I know, this prize has been awarded for 20 years already at the Olympiad. It will be wonderful if after the Batumi Olympiad it will remain in Georgia again" - said Irakli Tabagua, who was handed the souvenirs branded with the 43rd Chess Olympiad logo by Giorgi Giorgadze.  In addition to the "Nona Cup", the flag of the 2018 Batumi Chess Olympiad was exhibited and the photo exhibition reflecting the glory of Georgian chess was arranged. Georgian men's team member, International Grandmaster Luka Paichadze held a simultaneous game session. A chess quiz was held and the winners were awarded with Batumi 2018's T-shirts. Before the start of the Olympiad (September 23) "Nona Cup" will travel to every corner of Georgia. The prestigious award will be presented on June 23 on Turtle Lake in Tbilisi.

In 1997, the World Chess Federation – FIDE – established the “Nona Cup”. Starting from the Olympiad in 1998, the Cup will be awarded to the country, whose men and women's teams will get the most points in total.
